Google Unveils YouTube Red Originals

As more and more websites and TV channels unveil premium, pay-to-play streaming services, it was only a matter of time before YouTube, the king of internet video, got in on the game. With the launch of YouTube, the biggest video site on the web has entered the world of paid content with a service that promises ad-free viewing, and it gambles big on the viability of some of the site’s biggest personalities.

How It Works

For $9.99 per month (with a one month free trial), YouTube Red lets users watch YouTube videos completely ad free, and to watch videos offline on a phone or tablet. It also lets users stream video in the background, and includes a free subscription to Google Music and its impressive storage and streaming capabilities.

Perhaps most interestingly, YouTube Red subscribers get exclusive access to new, exclusive content that’s not available anywhere else on the site. Working in tandem with some of the site’s biggest stars, YouTube is making a big move into the world of original programming.

Original Programs

With the launch of YouTube Red comes the debut of multiple new original programs from online celebrities like PewDiePie and Lilly Singh, as well as teen-oriented media companies AwesomenessTV and Rooster Teeth.

The programs run the gamut from reality-TV style shows like Scare PewDiePie (where people try to prank the YouTube host) to original movies Dance Camp and animated sci-fi comedy Lazer Team. YouTube has also announced new shows that will be soon to follow, including another YouTube personality feature, Fight of the Living Dead, and college humor show Bad Internet.

Fuller House Update: Where Are They Now?

The late 80s/early 90s sitcom Full House is remembered fondly by millions of fans across the world, so it was really only a matter of time before a reunion of some sort took place. Still, many people were caught by surprise when Netflix announced that it had revived the series as Fuller House, a sequel/reboot featuring the original (but now much older) cast of characters. Would the show be able to retain its old magic, or had time passed it by? How many of the old cast members would return to play their old roles?

Now that the new series has made its Netflix debut, Full House fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Not only has the show stuck to the same sunny, old-fashioned type of family-friendly comedy that was the show’s hallmark, the cast was able to slip back into their old roles like they only stopped yesterday, not more than two decades ago.

Even Bob Saget, whose post-Full House career has mostly been noticeable for his decidedly un-family-friendly standup persona, doesn’t seem to have had any problem leaving his raunchier material at the door in order to play friendly, wholesome Danny Tanner. The only major cast members who don’t make an appearance are Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen as Michelle; both sisters declined to appear, though the character does appear in flashbacks.

If you’re ready to enjoy some old fashioned Full House fun, Fuller House is exactly what you’re looking for, and, if you’re looking for the perfect device to watch it with, visit ReplacementRemotes.com today for all the TV remotes and accessories you need. Contact us today at 855-5-REMOTE.

Twitch Grows from Humble Roots to Juggernaut

The livestreaming platform Twitch.tv grew from a spinoff of a general interest video streaming site to an Internet colossus, becoming the fourth largest source of peak Internet traffic in 2014. The platform allows convenient, easy access to video game-related content streamed by individual players, who are increasingly abandoning traditional television and using their game and TV remote controls to check out Twitch.

Visitors to Twitch can watch livestream videos of users playing or talking about videogames and can also interact with them via chat. Commonly viewed content on the site includes e-sports tournaments, gaming talk shows, and personal streams from players.

Twitch started as a content category of justin.tv, an Internet site that allowed anyone to broadcast video online. The video game category quickly became the most popular category, and justin.tv was eventually shut down to allow its founders to focus on Twitch.

A few fast facts about Twitch:

  • Twitch was recently acquired by Amazon for $970 million.
  • About 76 percent of users are between ages 18 and 49.
  • About 68 percent now watch less television to focus on game entertainment online.
  • About 58 percent of Twitch users spend 20 hours or more on the site.

Twitch is expected to continue to grow, as demand for gaming entertainment continues its exponential increase.

PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue Adding Channels, Cutting Prices

PlayStation Vue is set to upend how we watch television, allowing access to many sources traditionally only available with a cable television subscription. The new model could be as revolutionary for the industry as the introduction of the remote control.

PlayStation is adding channels to its line up and chopping prices on its Internet-delivered TV packages as it continues to ramp up its services. Sony just added ESPN and various Disney networks to its lineup.

PlayStation Vue

With regard to its price decreases, Sony officials say the price cut along with the addition of new channels is helping to build upon strong momentum the Internet-delivered service already has.

Sony recently cut prices for the three PlayStation Vue plans by $10 each. The 60-channel Access package now costs $39.99 per month. The 75-channel Core package now costs $44.99, and the 100-channel Elite service now costs $54.99.

PlayStation Vue launched last March. It’s not the only Internet-delivered service. Competitors include Dish Network’s Sling TV, and the soon-to-launch DirecTV Now. The television service should help make the top-selling PlayStation 4 console even more popular, as it enables the device to be the go-to for providing both gaming and viewing entertainment.

Wireless Technology

The Science behind Wireless Technology

Wireless technology has been around for over a hundred years. The invention of this technology was the combination of efforts by several famous scientists, each contributing toward specific areas of electromagnetism and electromagnetic fields. From their contributions came about the inventions of the radio and television. The main concept of wireless is to transmit a signal, data, or other information through the air using electromagnetic waves.

One of the biggest steps toward developing wireless technologies is attributed to James Maxwell, a Scottish physicist, who first theorized the relation between magnetism, electricity, and electromagnetic fields. In fact, these theories are still used today with modern wireless technologies, while they do work slightly differently.

Infrared Technology

Infrared was one of the first wireless technologies developed. It uses infrared beams to transmit information short distances and is very limited. This technology works well in remotes used for TVs, DVD players, stereo systems, garage door openers, and more.

Wi-Fi Technology

This type of wireless technology is able to transmit data at fast speeds in homes and businesses, and even in public areas. As such, it has become the preferred method for accessing the Internet by many people.

Bluetooth Technology

Bluetooth is a wireless technology that works over short distances and allows people the ability to control what types of devices are connected with each other. It does transmit data at fast speeds as found in smartphone, computers, TVs, universal remote controls, video gaming consoles, and other such devices.

4G Technology

4G is the latest wireless technology used with cellular enabled devices. This wireless technology works similarly to how radio and TV signals are transmitted. While the technology has improved, and is reliable for texting and talking, it can still be slower than other wireless technologies when accessing the Internet.

As you can see, our lives have gotten easier, thanks to wireless technologies and remote controls. For universal and remote controls for your electronic devices, call Replacement Remotes now at 1-855-5-REMOTE (1-855-573-6683).

Remote Controls

Who Invented the Remote Control?

The concept of the television remote control was conceptualized and patented in the 1890s by Nikola Tesla. During World War I, the Germans developed a remote control they could use to control boats. Since that time, the military application of remote controls has continued to evolve and is still used today.

It was not until the 1930s when the first remote controls were built for consumers. The first wireless, battery operated remotes were developed by Philco and used with their high-end radios. However, the radio remote control did not really make a big impact, since consumers at that time did not mind getting up to turn the radio on or off, change stations, or adjust the volume.

In the 1950s, as more people were getting televisions for their homes, one of the biggest complaints was having to get up and change channels. To address this issue, Zenith started to offer wired remotes with some TV models in the early 1950s. Then, in 1955, Eugene Polley, an engineer for Zenith, developed the first wireless remote control for televisions, aptly named the “Flash-matic.”

Zenith’s wireless remote has continued to evolve and change from the original remote invented in 1955. Today, remotes use infrared, Bluetooth, and other such technologies to control a wide array of products and devices, as well as universal remotes to control multiple devices.

How technology changed TV

4 Ways Technology Changed the TV Landscape

TV has undergone many changes since the first black and white sets were sent to market. Here are 4 of the biggest technological changes to TV over the decades:

  • Mass production – The first television signals were being broadcast in the 1930s, but the TV didn’t become a common item in American homes until 1948, when mass production began. In 1939, there were less than 1,000 TVs in use. By 1953, there were 25,233,000.
  • Cable – The widespread adoption of cable TV in the 70s, 80s, and 90s dramatically expanded the number of channels available to people in their homes and led to the creation of boutique, pay-for-access channels like HBO. The growth of cable also coincided with the start of MTV, which brought a pop culture revolution straight into American living rooms.
  • TiVo – In the age of streaming and smart TVs, it’s hard to remember what a dramatic change TiVo was from the TV status quo. Before TiVo, people had to either catch a show right as it aired, or hope that the cassette in their VCR didn’t run out of tape. Suddenly, people had the ability to digitally record shows and store them in perpetuity. Within a few years, they could even record on two channels at once.
  • Social media – While sites like Twitter and Facebook didn’t change TV directly, they did change the way people talk about and experience television. Instead of waiting until the next day to talk about a show at work, people can share their reactions to a show as it airs, and potentially reach millions of people in the process.

Finding the Right Device for Your Streaming Setup

TV has entered the streaming era, and many people are cutting the cable cord and turning exclusively to Netflix, Hulu, and other on-demand services. To help facilitate the change, many companies now sell streaming boxes and streaming sticks that bring these channels right to your TV screen, but which one of these devices is the best? There are many to choose from, but three in particular come with a distinct set of advantages:

  • Roku 3 – There are at least 17 different types of streaming boxes on the market, but the Roku is probably the best of them all. One of the main advantages of the Roku is that it doesn’t prioritize streaming channels, and it lets you set the order you want your channels in, unlike the streaming products made by companies like Amazon that have channels and products to promote. The interface is also very easy to use and gives you a large selection of streaming channels to choose from. One downside: It can sometimes be slow, especially right after the TV is turned on. Roku also makes a streaming stick; it’s a bit slower, but it’s cheaper.
  • Chromecast – Chromecast is fast, is easy to use, and has a large number of channels to choose from. Unfortunately, some in-demand channels aren’t available, such as Amazon, Starz, and Encore. It balances that out with an increasing number of apps and add-ons. The streaming stick is also cheaper than a Roku box.
  • Fire TV – The main benefit of Amazon’s Fire TV is that it gives full access to Amazon Prime, including music streaming and lots of free videos. What it doesn’t have, however, is the same number of apps available for Chromecast or the sheer number of channels available through Roku.

If you don’t mind some occasional slowness, and you want the most channels, Roku is the best choice. If you mostly just use Amazon, Fire TV is the obvious pick. If you like being able to customize your device with apps, Chromecast is the one for you.

How to Know When It’s Time to Change Your Projector Bulb

If you use a projector (either at home or in the office), knowing when it’s time to change the bulb is an important piece of knowledge. If you change the bulb too early, you’re wasting money. If you don’t change it soon enough, you might end up burning out the bulb and having to wait to use the projector until a new one arrives, or even end up causing damage to the unit by not replacing a worn-out bulb.

Not sure what signs to look for when judging whether or not it’s time to change a projector bulb? Here are some tips you should know:

  • You have to switch the projector on more than once to get the lamp to work – If you find yourself having to turn the projector on and off two or three times to get the bulb to light up, that’s probably a sign that the current bulb is on its way out.
  • The projector makes a clicking noise before the lamp activates – Does the lamp take a few seconds to activate, and makes a clicking sound before it powers up? Then it’s probably time to replace the bulb.
  • Images appear dimmer – If images appear dimmer or out of focus, then the most likely cause is that the bulb is at the end of its lifecycle.

If you own a newer model projector, the good news is that most manufacturers now include a lamp indicator on their projectors. Keep an eye on this indicator so that you can stay on top of ordering new bulbs.

Boosting Your Wi-Fi Signal for Superior Streaming

Just about everyone who’s watched a movie or TV show on Netflix has run into connection issues that have slowed their entertainment to a crawl. Improving Wi-Fi strength can help folks who enjoy streaming movies and television get reliable access to their favorite shows and films.

If you’d like to boost your Wi-Fi strength, consider these tips:

  • Optimal placement – Your Wi-Fi signal strength will be weak if you have it placed in a cabinet or in a corner behind the couch. For the best signal, place your router in a high place with plenty of space. The top of a bookshelf is great, as is mounting the device on a wall.
  • Replace your antenna – You can coax greater performance from your router by installing a better antenna. Many Wi-Fi routers come with very basic antennas. Upgrading to a newer, higher quality antenna can help you get better performance from your device. Replacing antennas is usually pretty easy and only takes a few minutes.
  • Update your firmware – Router manufacturers are frequently finding tweaks to improve Wi-Fi strength. If you haven’t updated your router in a while, you may be missing out. Check out your router’s product documentation or go online to find out how to update your device.
